Kweller Prep Tutor Amira

Amira is currently an undergraduate student at Harvard University. Amira is majoring in Applied Math with a minor in Global Health/Health Policy.

Amira is a graduate of Hunter College High School. During her time at Hunter College High School, Amira was a three-year member and served as a co-captain of the Hunter Mock Trial Team as a three-time City Champion and led the team to the NY State Finals. Amira was a six-year member of her school’s Black Student Union, where she served as President for two years (as the youngest elected president). Amira also created and ran the BSU Mentorship Program, connecting over 50 7th – 12th graders to foster a stronger community.

Amira served as the Director of Operations for the math tutoring program Girls are Great at Math and was a tutor for 3rd and 5th graders for four years. Amira was a 10th-grade Honors Chemistry Peer Tutor, a 9th and 10th-grade Honors French Peer Tutor, and served as a Hunter Writing Center Mentor for 7th-12th graders for all English and Social Studies subjects. Amira was also a Big Sib for 7th and 8th graders, in which she mentored over 50 middle school students. Amira loves fostering a love of education in younger students and is excited to continue that passion at Kweller.

Amira was the co-editor-in-chief and creative director of Grapevine (Hunter’s Pop Culture Magazine), Noteworthy (Hunter’s Music Magazine), and Editor of Chapter 11 (Hunter’s Satire Newspaper). Amira was a 4-year member and striker of Hunter College High School’s Girls Varsity Soccer team, in which she was a City Champion and a two-time City Finalist. As a passionate writer, Amira has achieved an international Superior Writing Award from the NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing. She was a two-time Scholastic Art & Writing Gold Key Award Winner. As a passionate mathematician and scientist, Amira completed a college-level Biomedical Engineering Course in which she designed, coded, and constructed a heart monitor with an EKG screen. The summer after her junior year, Amira was an intern at Lenox Hill Hospital’s Clinical Research Team in the Neurosurgery Department, where she designed and presented an original clinical research protocol.

Through Amira’s freshman to junior year, she was in Extended Honors Math, an accelerated math class. As a junior and senior, Amira took Advanced Placement Courses such as AP French, AP Chemistry, and AP BC Calculus, Honors Physics, Honors Advanced Essay Writing, and Honors Medical Physiology. She also designed her own Honors English Independent Study at Hunter. Amira sat for the SAT during her junior year, receiving an 800/800 in Math and 720/800 with a 1520 composite score, putting her in the 98th percentile. She also sat for the ACT following her junior year with a 36/36 in both English and Reading, a 35/36 in Math, and 34/36 in Science, with a 35 ACT composite placing her in the 99th percentile.

In her free time, Amira enjoys baking and cooking, watching soccer and Formula 1, and as a classically trained pianist, playing piano. Amira was a child actor, in which she has acted in TV/Commercials/Radio and is a member of SAG-AFTRA, and is looking forward to continuing her acting career in college–she loves watching the award shows. She is a big fan of pop culture!
