Derek is an undergraduate student at Stony Brook University majoring in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, with a double major in economics. His current GPA is 3.97/4.0. During his university years, he served as a teaching assistant (TA) for multiple math courses (Finite Mathematical Structures, Introduction to Probability Theory). Derek is also currently serving as secretary of Animated Perspectives, the university’s anime club.
Derek graduated from the Bronx High School of Science with a 96/100 GPA. During high school, he took and scored high on many advanced placement courses, including Calculus BC, Statistics, Microeconomics, and Physics I. He also scored 1500 on the SAT, with 700 in the English section and 800 in the math section.
Outside of school, Derek is currently an intern for Grimm Analytics, a company founded by applied math Stony Brook professors. They are focused on analyzing and modeling traded assets in the market. Currently, he is working on creating a model that can best predict price movement over a 5-minute intervals, while also accounting for overnight time steps.
In his free time, Derek likes to go outside for night walks while listening to music (he’s currently a big j-pop fan!), visit botanical gardens, play badminton with friends, or stay at home reading light novels or manga. He also enjoys cooking and is always ready to try a new recipe.
