GABBY

GABBY attends St. John’s University, where she is majoring in Audiology. She is pursuing a career as an audiologist and aspires to attend graduate school in 2021 to earn her Doctorate in Audiology. Audiologists are trained to diagnose, manage, and treat hearing or balance problems for individuals from birth through adulthood. Gabby shared that she was inspired to pursue the field after observing her brother receiving help for hearing loss after he was born with single-sided deafness. Gabby grew up in Rego Park, Queens, and graduated from Forest Hills High School with a 95 GPA where she took AP Psychology and a number of college-level classes such as English 101. She was an active member of her high school’s theater program for all four years. A talented writer, Gabby wrote her own play and performed plays and monologues. A talented cinematic, Gabby produced multiple short films; one of them received an award from the High School 10-Day Film Challenge, the nation’s #1 high school film festival in which teams of students make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 10 school days. She is very strong in English, Math and Linguistics. Currently, Gabby is maintaining a 3.97/4.0 GPA at St. John’s. She is involved in the Speech and Hearing Association, is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), part of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and is a member of the Sigma Alpha Eta Honor Society. In addition, Gabby volunteered throughout 2019 at a private practice for Audiology and at various nursing homes in Queens. Throughout her audiology-based volunteering, Gabby obtained hands-on experience by interacting with patients, running audiological tests, and translating medical information for Russian-speaking patients. Gabby is fluent in Russian and is proficient in Spanish. She has years of experience tutoring elementary school students in English, math, reading, writing, and grammar. She has previously worked at the NYC School Construction Authority, where she was a summer intern in the Architecture & Engineering department. There, she created scope book reports and helped develop school library programs. Additionally, Gabby volunteered at the Speech and Hearing Clinic affiliated with St. John’s University during the summer of 2018. There, she communicated with patients, handled secretarial tasks, and learned the steps involved in performing hearing tests. Gabby is an activist for animal rights and served as a leader in her High School’s animal rights club. Gabby is very passionate about sharing her knowledge and insights with students, especially because she finds a sense of belonging when working with the youth. At Kweller, she enjoys tutoring elementary school students in English and Math! Her favorite group is the fifth graders, and she greatly enjoys helping them transition to middle school. When not at Kweller, Gabby attends rock concerts, travels, writes movie reviews, and enjoys spending quality time with her best friend, Marie Kessel, who also works as a tutor at Kweller. They have known each other since birth and grew up a block away from each other. They were meant to work together! Gabby enjoys teaching children and puts her heart into every class. She is excited to develop ELA and math skills for elementary school students.
