Kweller Prep Tutor Kate

Kate is currently an undergraduate student at Yale University. Kate is majoring in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology with a concentration in neuroscience with the intention of attending medical school. She graduated from Townsend Harris High School with a 4.0 GPA.

Kate was actively involved in the Townsend Harris community, serving as the Captain of the Girls’ track team, Vice President of the Student Union, Treasurer of Key Club, and a tutor of Algebra and Biology. Kate has extensive experience with writing mentorship, serving as a tutor for ENGin, where she helped young students in Ukraine learn to read and write in English, as well as a writing tutor in Townsend Harris. She is frequently called upon by the senior class of Townsend Harris to read and review their college essays and supplements as well as provide feedback.

Kate’s most notable experience at Townsend Harris was her involvement in the school’s newspaper, The Classic. She was a staff writer for her freshman and sophomore years, Managing Editor her junior year, and was promoted to Editor-in-Chief her senior year. As Editor-in-Chief of the Classic, she traveled to Albany, Boston, and various other locations to meet with legislatures to discuss the right to the free press among high school student publications. She received awards from the Newsies and was able to address multiple issues facing the school and the city through the power of journalism and reporting.

In the academic setting, Kate was in all Honors and AP classes throughout all four years at THHS. She took many rigorous courses, including AP World History (4), AP United States History (5), AP Psychology, AP English Literature (5), and AP US Government. Kate also received a composite SAT score of 1500 (760/800 in the Math section and 740/800 in the English section).

Outside of school, Kate was involved in a variety of political campaigns, such as her work with the Brad Schwartz, Ethan Felder, and Austin Shafron campaigns. In her role as an intern for these campaigns, she canvassed the neighborhoods of Nassau, Forest Hills, and Bayside. She phonebanked for a total of 7 months across all three campaigns, where she urged neighbors to vote for her candidate. She engaged with the voters, addressed their concerns, and discussed their desires for the future.

Additionally, Kate serves as a frequent intern for the RiseBoro Community Partnership in Bushwick, Brooklyn. In her role as an intern, Kate has served in the human resources department, reading and discussing complaints from fellow employees and attempting to rectify their issues to create a better working environment. Additionally, she worked in the Housing department, where she reviewed budgets and spoke to members of the community about their current housing situation and how she could improve it. Lastly, as a volunteer, Kate has packed and delivered meals every Thanksgiving and Christmas for the last ten years.

During the 2024 summer, Kate delved into her desire to pursue a career in medicine by interning at the Hospital for Special Surgery. She worked under a Rheumatologist, a research assistant, and a lab technician. Here she studied how lupus affected women in their pregnancy and studied multiple factors such as BMI, complement, and blood cell counts. Kate learned the programming of R, how to read and review data reports in Excel, consented to multiple patients to the trial her supervisor was conducting, and ran numerous blood assays. She attributes this experience as the defining step in her medical career.

Kate is eager to help mentor students at Kweller Prep and further their academic experiences. During her free time, Kate enjoys going on runs, reading, watching movies, and cooking.
