ET-375 Introduction to Robotics (4 college credits)

This program is designed to introduce students to robotics within a hands-on four (4) college credit course, ET 375 (Introduction to Robotics), to robotic construction, programming, operation, and basic design theory. Throughout the summer, students will work in teams to design, construct, and program autonomous mobile robots by learning and using the C Programming Language within the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Robotics System among other components. Robotics projects will include behaviors such as line-following, random roaming with obstacle avoidance using IR sensors and ultrasonic range finding sensors, and rotate until a path is clear using the data from the ultrasonic range finders.

Metrocards and lunch vouchers will be provided.

Eligibility Requirements

• Be a New York City public high school student, entering 11th or 12th grade in September 2017
• A score of between 65 and 79 on the Algebra I or Geometry Regents– no greater than 79 on any Math Regents (no greater than 70 on any Common Core Math)
• Teacher recommendations should be based on GPA, attendance, and motivation.

TH-124 Summer Theatre Production Workshop (3 college credits)

Open Call: Looking for aspiring and would-be actors, costumers, makeup artists, set designers, and other theatre hopefuls to hone their craft and perform a play at the  Queensborough Community College College Now Summer Theatre Production Workshop. Students will also attend a Broadway Show.

Metrocards and lunch vouchers will be provided.

Eligibility Requirements

• Be a New York City public high school student, entering 11th or 12th grade in September 2017
• Have a minimum score of 65 on the English Language Arts (ELA) Regents exam OR an overall high school GPA of 70 or above
• Students coming from Queensborough Community College partner schools will be given priority, but eligible students from other public schools may attend if space permits.
• Additionally, preference will be given to students entering their junior and senior years and spots will be offered to sophomores as space permits.

Did you know that 1 in 4 college students have to take remedial classes? Did you know that remedial classes repeat high school material but cost more time and financial aid than college courses? Did you know that students in remediation cannot take the courses they need to graduation until they are remediation free?

About Summer College Focus

College Focus is a FREE CUNY college readiness program. It helps you test out of remediation before you enter college. This five-week summer intensive program includes meal vouchers and Metrocards.

Eligibility for Summer College Focus

Students are eligible for College Focus if they are high school seniors who are on-track to graduate with Regents/Common Core scores in either or both Math or English that will allow them to graduate, but aren’t high enough to meet the college readiness benchmark.

For College Focus (COFO) Math:

Seniors who scored a 65-69 on Common Core Algebra I or Geometry Regents

• Have already successfully completed their commencement level credit math sequence (core math sequence), and
• are on track to graduate with at least a 65 on ELA Regents and have excellent attendance records.

For College Focus (COFO) English:

• Seniors who scored a 65-74 on the ELA Regents, and
• Have excellent attendance records.

Summer College Focus Dates

The summer program will run from July 5 to August 3rd , from Monday through Thursday, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. The five-week program provides intensive instruction to prepare for the CUNY Assessment tests as well as college readiness workshops, tutoring and recreational opportunities (including use of the gym and tennis courts). Participation in all of these components is mandatory. The CUNY Assessment Tests will be given on Monday, August 7th.

College Focus Summer 2017 Schedule

The Math/ELA Class will take place after lunch on Wednesday July 5, 2017.

Week of July 5, 2017

Students will attend a one-day orientation to include a program overview, ID cards and campus tour.

Sample Week for Program (July 10 – August 3)

*Math classes are given in the lab and tutors will “push in” and work with students during class

*Tutoring for individuals/small groups as assessed by the instructor
