Kweller Prep Tutor Shawn

SHAWN is an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park. In the last five years, 56 students and scholars from the University of Maryland, have accepted Fulbright grants. Among the faculty, there are two Nobel laureates, four Pulitzer Prize winners, one Emmy winner, and one Tony winner. The University of Maryland ranks among Forbes’ top 15 Public Colleges.

Shawn is pursuing a major in Mathematics, with a focus on Statistics, in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. In his first year, he completed the honors sequence of MATH 340/341, combining concepts from linear algebra, multivariable calculus, and ordinary differential equations. He also has a second major as he seeks a Bachelor of Arts from University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy. Completed coursework in this school ranges from nonprofit management to ethics and moral issues in the policy field. Moving forward, Shawn is on track to receive a dual degree in four years with a B.S. in Mathematics and a B.A. in Public Policy. He recently completed a political affairs internship with The Borgen Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating global poverty. In his sophomore year of college, he will take part in University of Maryland’s Federal Fellows program, with a focus on Public Health Policy, which includes a Spring internship in Washington, D.C. He will also continue to study statistical programming with the coding language R. Shawn is a National Merit Scholar and has received a President’s Scholarship from his university.

Shawn graduated from Townsend Harris High School in 2021. He excelled in A.P. Calculus B.C., A.P. Physics 1, A.P. Spanish Literature, A.P. World History, A.P. U.S. History, A.P. Computer Science A, and other college-level courses. He scored a 1580/1600 on the SAT, with a perfect 800 in the math section and 780 in English. He also earned perfect scores on the Math II SAT Subject Test as well as the PSAT. While at Townsend Harris, Shawn was President of the Model United Nations team, winning numerous awards at local and international conferences. He was also an opinion writer for the school newspaper, The Classic, and was a four-year Varsity distance runner for the cross country and track and field teams.

Outside of tutoring at Kweller Prep Queens, Shawn enjoys going for runs and long walks, watching or playing sports with his friends, and being politically and civically active. In the past, Shawn has worked with students as a summer camp counselor through NYC’s Summer Rising program. He has a passion for sharing his interests with younger generations and has academic pursuits spanning all subject areas.
